Expected Goals (xG)
xG measures the quality of chances created. Each shot is assigned a probability based on location, angle, and type.
A team creating 2.1 xG per match is generating roughly 2 clear-cut chances per game.
Compare xG to actual goals scored. Teams underperforming xG are likely to improve. Teams overperforming may regress.

Form and Recent Results
Last 5-6 matches give the best indicator of current form. Going further back dilutes recent trends.
Look at underlying performance, not just results. A team winning 1-0 while creating 0.5 xG is riding luck.
Home and away form should be analysed separately — some teams perform very differently by venue.
Shots and Shot Quality
Total shots tell you about attacking intent. Shots on target measure accuracy and composure.
Big chances created and big chances missed reveal finishing quality and luck.
A team with high shots but low xG is shooting from poor positions. High xG from few shots means quality chances.
Possession and Passing
Possession percentage alone is a poor predictor of match outcome. Many successful teams play on the counter.
Passes into the final third and progressive passes are better indicators of attacking quality.
Possession is most useful when combined with other metrics like xG and chances created.
Defensive Stats
Goals conceded is the obvious metric but xG against (xGA) tells you more about defensive quality.
Clean sheet percentage, interceptions per game, and tackles won indicate defensive solidity.
A team conceding few goals but facing high xGA is likely due a correction — the defence is overperforming.
Head-to-Head Records
H2H records matter most when the same managers and key players are involved.
Historical H2H over 5+ years with different squads has limited predictive value.
Focus on venue-specific H2H — how teams perform at a particular ground.
