What Is a Value Bet?

A value bet exists when the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome.

If you believe a team has a 50% chance of winning but the odds imply only 40%, you have found value.

Value betting is the only mathematically proven way to profit from sports betting in the long run.

Expected Value (EV) Formula

EV = (Probability of Winning x Profit) - (Probability of Losing x Stake).

Example: True probability 50%, odds 2.20. EV = (0.50 x 1.20) - (0.50 x 1.00) = +0.10 per unit.

A positive EV (+EV) means the bet is profitable over time. Negative EV (-EV) means the house has the edge.

How to Find Value

Compare odds across multiple bookmakers — significant discrepancies often indicate value.

Build your own probability models using data and statistics, then compare against market prices.

Look for situations where public perception distorts odds — big-name teams are often overbet.

Tip: wagerbase MarketGap compares bookmaker odds against prediction market prices to automatically surface potential value.

Closing Line Value (CLV)

The closing line is the final odds before an event starts. It is widely considered the most efficient price.

Consistently beating the closing line is the strongest indicator that you are finding genuine value.

Track your bets against closing odds to measure your edge objectively.

Common Mistakes

Confusing a win with a good bet. A bad value bet can still win — but it will lose money long-term.

Only betting on favourites. Value can exist at any price point — big underdogs can offer the best value.

Ignoring sample size. You need hundreds of bets before you can draw conclusions about your edge.
